"Clifford’s Tower, a semi-ruined 13th-century remnant of York Castle, is also one of the few Norman relics in a city dominated by Viking influence. Nowadays, Clifford’s Tower is one of the most popular and emblematic sights in York, and the panoramic views from the tower’s ramparts make it an excellent starting point for first-time visitors to historic York."

"The York Cold War Bunker has to be one of the city’s most captivating attractions. Tucked down a quiet residential cul-de-sac, you’ll find the inconspicuous entrance through an industrial-looking bomb-proof door. Go past the decontamination room, and down to the control centre, dormitory, and staff room where, for more than 30 years, this place hummed with activity, staffed by volunteers ready to map and manage the fallout from a nuclear blast."

10 of the Best Historic Sites in York
"St Mary’s Abbey is a picturesque ruined Benedictine abbey in York, located in York Museum Gardens. Once the richest abbey in the north of England, it now tells the story of York’s influential ecclesiastical past, and its degradation through Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. The first church on the site of St Mary’s was built in 1055 and dedicated to St Olaf of Norway, and following the Norman conquest was refounded by King William Rufus in 1088 during his visit to York."

City Walk: York's Historical Architecture, York, England
"Once the richest abbey in the north of England, St Mary's lies in what are now the York Museum Gardens, on a steeply-sloping site to the west of York Minster. The abbey dates back to 1086 and over time became the wealthiest monastery in northern England before it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539. Over the next 200 years, it fell into disrepair and was largely dismantled for its stone."

We also had to wait 10 minutes for them (fast food?).The donner was the saltiest thing I have ever tasted; I only had one fork full and could not continue. The chicken kebab was dried out. Both were served on a weird pancake sort of thing. The garlic sauce was like a thick sour cream. The only thing that stopped me taking them back was the fact that the woman serving was abrupt and scary!"

Top 10 budget restaurants, cafes and pubs in York
"The Shambles Kitchen dishes up a few other items (cakes and smoothies, wraps, a daily soup such as chickpea, lentil and harissa), but there is no doubting the main draw: its pulled pork sandwich. Dripping in its own juices and long on flavour, the meat is slow-cooked for 12 hours and served on fat buns with a peppy raw slaw and a choice of sauces – go for the smoked apple. At £5.50 a pop, these are not particularly cheap baps, but it is tasty tackle and you are putting money into a business where, in stark contrast to the many chains which crisscross York, everything is cooked from scratch using local ingredients."

As well as their tiny permanent home on the famous Shambles, they can often be found selling their popular meat sandwiches, loaded fries and sausage combos on Shambles Market or Parliament Street. Vegan and veggie options are available, and they even do a kids’ hot sandwich too."
