I’m so pleased that I did give it a chance though, as it’s one of the best vegan places in York!. The premise of Humpit is almost like a ridiculously healthy kebab; you choose from a selection of dishes including pitas and salad bowls and then add all the fresh ingredients alongside your hummus!"

"If there was one serious oversight in my original 2009 “budget eats” guide, it was not paying full due respect to this vegan veteran. Its soups, dhals, top-ranking falafel, hummus and tinas (fried carrot patties of remarkable ersatz-creaminess; it’s the coconut milk apparently), are the stuff of local legend and tasty enough to have persuaded many sceptical carnivores to come around. You can eat in of course, in the bright, surprisingly Andalucian-styled cafe-restaurant (El Piano has sister branches in southern Spain), but the takeaway hatch is where you will find a serious bargain."

"I really liked this place as it seemed to have a real local feel about it. The staff and owners had a good rapport with lots of the locals who came in for takeaway coffees and pastries and there was a welcoming, happy, laid back atmosphere. Italian inspired (some of the staff are Italian and it almost seemed to be a meeting point for York’s Italian community!) this little gem of a place is open from breakfast until evening and serves simple, tasty, food."

"28/02/2021: I bought a triple chocolate brownie, which I can affirm as a local is the best brownie you'll get in any of Pickering's many teashops. And the roasted tomato soup (complete with basil oil and garlic crutons) was not only punching way above the averaage for takeaway soup - they'd also put real effort into not packaging it all up in a bunch of plastic, was all wood and cardboard.I'd have been happy to see them open whatever food they had come up with, but this was really, really good, high end and delicious, sold by jolly staff who were obviously taking considerable pride in their stuff."
