"At one point the majestic centerpiece of York Castle, this historic keep has had a long and troubled life. Originally built to intimidate and subdue the Viking north by William the Conqueror, it has been twice burned to the ground in its lifespan. The other surviving fragments of the castle (such as the bailey wall and parts of the south gatehouse) blend seamlessly into the bustling city streets."
"Students can find it right between the Castle Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. Clifford’s Tower offers visitors stunning panoramic views over Old York, thus making it the ideal starting point for any visit to the city. There’s plenty to discover here, including the remains of York Castle built by William the Conqueror, a prison and a royal mint."
"Clifford’s Tower is another one of the cities most famous attractions. Whilst taking photos from outside of the tower is completely free of charge, ticket fees do apply if you wish to go inside. Once inside, you can check out some great views of York from the top."
"This excellent museum has displays of everyday life through the centuries, with reconstructed domestic interiors, a Victorian street and a prison cell where you can try out a condemned man's bed – and it could be..."
"Located between Leeds and Wetherby, Bramham Park is the site of the iconic Leeds Festival which occurs every August bank holiday weekend. If you don’t hold tickets to the festival, visit during the rest of the year to explore the 18th Century manor house and its sprawling grounds."
"09/06/2021: We always come here when we want the proper Italian experience. The restaurant is always full and has a great buzzy atmosphere,With people laughing and enjoying themselves, it is a happy place. The menu is varied and has a great selection of dishes to choose from.We have a few starters which we all share and may be a pizza , which is made with homemade dough and cooked in a wood burning pizza oven so it has that wonderful smoky taste. Then we have steaks , we have a few and share them with some potatoes which are simply amazing and some sauces. The steaks are chargrilled which is the best way to cook steak in my opinion and they have such a great taste and are so tender and always cooked to perfection. For dessert again we have a selection which we all help ourselves to the Ricotta cheese cake is fantastic and so is the Tiramisu. The service is relaxed and friendly as you would expect from a small Italian restaurant. What makes the place different from other Italian restaurants is that it has a soul and of course Paolo the man himself. He makes the place with his wonderful personality and welcoming attitude , nothing is too much trouble for him.So if you want a great authentic Italian experience with fantastic food, cooked well and great service, this is the place to go. 09/06/2021: The owner Paolo is a rear character. He brings such a fun and warm atmosphere to the restaurant."

"The Botanist is a great place to both eat and drink in York as it has such an extensive cocktail menu, as well as great foodie options, too. I’ve been to The Botanist on several different occasions, both with Matt, my friends and old work colleagues for our Christmas party last year and it’s delivered beyond my expectations every single time. I’d recommend: lamb kofta or chicken hanging kebabs (SO good) or the crispy chicken burger."
"The Botanist have a fresh new offering for brunch that you can upgrade to bottomless brunch if you would like (and what’s not to like?). You choose a dish from six different sections of the menu – each section has three options."
"Reviews: "We have been a couple of times this week and have to say the food and service have been second to none. Would highly recommend the steak main and the Jaffa pudding absolutely divine. Well done to all for your hard work.". "One of our favourite places.Great food and outstanding service! I would definitely recommend this restaurant .". "New menu offers a fantastic choice that will suit everybody & individual requests were gladly met. Home made chips really do make a difference & theirs are great. Looking forward to another visit."
"Newcomer Barleys is causing a storm down Newland Avenue – and for good reason!. Barleys is 100% vegan and offers a great range of deli style products as well as a range of fantastic sandwiches – my personal favourite is the chicken caesar wrap. Barleys has only been open for a couple of weeks now and I’ve visited more times than I care to admit."
"A vegan deli that also serves incredible coffee, Barley’s is an absolute must visit if you want to eat healthy or cut out the meat and dairy. Barley’s is truly a vegan and vegetarian paradise, with a myriad of fresh vegan sandwiches, deli treats and even a dairy-free cheese counter."
"Sited at the top of Micklegate a few yards from the city walls this bar from independent Scottish brewing giants Brewdog opened after a protracted court battle with a local trader – much to the relief of their loyal following of fans in the York area. I say fans because Brewdog as a company have so far attracted investment in their crowdfunding equity scheme from over 100,000 loyal drinkers. The multi-roomed bar is huge."
"From grain to glass, see how traditional ale is created at York Brewery. Located just inside the city walls on Toft Green, York Brewery has been handcrafting real ales since 1996. The brewery site was built in the late 16th century, and has seen many uses over its history, but now it is home to a 20-barrel brew plant, with six traditional open top fermenters and five conditioning tanks."
"El Piano, tucked away in the historic Grape Lane, is wholly gluten-free and plant-based. That doesn’t mean it’s restricted menu by any stretch, as a 5-year winner of Visit York’s Tourism Award will attest to. With over two decades behind them, the El Piano team also run a regular cooking school and a B&B just in case you were keen to really immerse yourself in the world of veggie and vegan cookery."
