10 cosy places for coffee and cake in Leeds
"Fettle is a local favourite in Leeds thanks to its yummy food and charming Scandinavian-style décor. Their brunch menu has dishes from across the globe and plenty of options for us meat-free folk to tuck into, while their smaller evening menu also has several veggie-friendly options. If you’re after a calming atmosphere and some delicious food, then get booked in here now."
"This Scandinavian-inspired little cafe is a little off the beaten path, but Fettle is well worth seeking out. It’s a bright airy space with long wooden benches and cool light fittings. Grab a cup of Limini coffee, a special Ippuku Japanese tea or one of the special brew teas from Jeeves and Jericho, before poring over their food menu."
"Cosy and laidback, this organic café is a hotspot for quality, locally-sourced food. Open for early breakfast, brunch, and evening meals, guests can expect everything from fresh pastries to pork Wellington."
"This little gem is one of York’ most recent entries in The Good Food Guide 2019. Owned and managed by a husband and wife team who are as passionate about the ingredients used in their food as they are about the final results, a visit to Partisan will exceed all expectations. Located on the beautiful Micklegate, Partisan is a cafe by day and a restaurant by night."
"When to go: Head down for a lazy brunch, take a book, order a large coffee, and while away a few hours. What to have: The partisan breakfast (meat, veggie and vegan available) cooked and served in a skillet, is comfort food at its best. For something a little lighter, try their Persian eggs with Medjoul dates and warming spices."
"We are an independent speciality coffee shop/restaurant situated in York’s most elegant street. We have an all day Breakfast/Brunch menu and a few lunch dishes. We cook everything to order using the best quality fresh ingredients."
"Brew and Brownie was a place that I wanted to visit in York for the longest time, but every time we went passed it, there were queues out of the door and down the street!. Thankfully, one day last spring, Matt and I managed to grab a table and even though I was recovering from just having my tonsils removed, I was determined to make the most out of our visit there!. Brew and Brownie offer an incredible breakfast/brunch menu including everything from a smorgasbord of egg dishes, avocado dishes and plenty of tasty sandwiches."
"If I lived in York, you would find me at Brew & Brownie multiple times a week. Not only do they serve excellent artisan coffee drinks and quality loose leaf tea, their baked goods and extensive breakfast and lunch menu are incredible. The menu changes with the season and ingredients are sourced from the best local farmers and suppliers."
"As the name suggest, Brew & Brownie make an abundance of different flavoured brownies. I must have sampled about 4 of them during my time in York, and even stopped by before I caught the train home so that I could enjoy a little treat on the journey!. And if you’re not a brownie lover, never fear!"
"The Mad Greek is a no-nonsense eatery with a lively atmosphere that dishes up scrumptious, traditional Greek grub. You can tuck into juicy Chicken Souvlaki Skewers or try the flavourful Keftedes Meatballs cooked in a tomato and feta sauce. But their speciality though is their gyro, which comes stuffed with your choice of chicken, pork or feta & tomato."
"There are several things I love about IF Coffee-Bar: the breakfast burritos (they’re the ultimate hangover cure and will keep you going all day), the gorgeous decor featuring plenty of plants, the variety of seating spaces (more on this in a moment), the friendly staff, and the fact that you can enjoy a cheeky glass of Prosecco if you don’t fancy a coffee or want to celebrate the end of a hard day’s work!. The space is fantastic – you can enjoy the buzz of the cafe and take advantage of multiple plug points and natural light at the front, you can cosy up in a couple of comfortable ‘snugs’ at the back, or you can head upstairs for larger tables and a great view over Call Lane. IF Coffee-Bar is definitely one of Leeds’ best coffee shops, and I’ll casually mention that they do a bottomless brunch too!"
"Step inside their cool, rustic Call Lane cafe which is split over two floors or grab one to go at Kirkgate Market and get ready for a delicious cuppa. They’ve gone for Leeds favourites North Star, which they turn into their distinctive Australian-style serve – expect big punchy flavours whether you’re going for a flat white or their signature long black. They also offer an Aeropress filter coffee, and if you fancy a bite to eat, try the pancakes at breakfast, a freshly made sandwich for lunch or one of their handmade cakes at any time of day."
"Art lovers should make a beeline for Café 164, where they’ll find an impressive selection of food and drink alongside rotating exhibits of art and photography lining the walls. A selection of sandwiches are served on delicious ciabatta and focaccia bread, baked fresh on site with a selection of soups and salads completing the menu. Coffee comes courtesy of local roasters and there’re plenty of dairy-free milk options."
"Cafe 164 is set within The Gallery at 164, so you can tie a trip to this Leeds coffee shop with a browse around the latest exhibition!. It’s a great spot for lunch, selling sandwiches (not just your run-of-the-mill ones either!), soups and salads but also a hot special which is constantly changing. Their bread is hand mixed, hand shaped and hand cut and they have an onsite focaccia and ciabatta bakery."
"Serving speciality espresso based coffees from a range of local and independent suppliers, Cafe 164 provides a great array of choice, including rotations from North Star Coffee, Bruce and Luke's, Casa Espresso and Maude Coffee. Visit: Munro House, Duke Street, LS9 8AG - cafe164.com"
"A shabby chic decor is combined with distinctive Victorian architecture at Corner House Coffee Bar, so it’s the perfect place to get your brunch fix. They serve up a host of classics, from a Full English to Eggs Benedict and Smashed Avocado on Toast, but you can also try something different. Take the Natural Smoked Haddock Kedgeree for example – it’s a classic Indian dish which brings together rice, flaked fish, eggs and veggies, brought to life with a kick of curry powder."
"Corner House is a coffee shop which serves breakfast, lunch and small plates in an evening. It also has a selection of coffees from around the world and serves alcoholic drinks. There is a specific menu for kids which also includes breakfast options."
"House of Koko is a cool, family-run cafe on the southern edge of Chapel Allerton and it’s a must-visit. You can get a cracking cup of North Star coffee or try one of their loose leaf teas, but don’t just come for the drinks – they have a creative food menu that’s worth checking out. Start with the classic buttermilk and berries pancakes for breakfast or come later in the day for eclectic dishes like their chicken & avocado salad or homemade baked beans on sourdough."
"House of Koko, 62 Harrogate Rd, Leeds, LS7 4LA - Visit now. As well as great Northstar coffee, House of Koko offers a variety of real teas, sourced from around the world, and some very rare indeed. A place where you will always be met with a smile."
"House of Koko is an independent coffee and tea house in Chapel Allerton. Offer hand-pulled Northstar coffee and a wide range of loose teas. Have an ever changing seasonal menu curated by head chef that focuses on healthy, locally sourced produce."
"Fika North is a Scandinavian-inspired speciality coffee shop in Headingley. The name comes from a Swedish tradition that’s all about enjoying good coffee with great friends and that’s exactly what you can do here. It’s a relaxed hang-out with modern furniture and loads of leafy plants."
"Fika North is one of the best speciality coffee shops in Leeds. It’s a stylish Scandinavian-inspired joint with real Yorkshire spirit. You can try brews from a rotating line-up of local roasters like Pink Lane, Maude and Casa Espresso."
"While not strictly a vegetarian restaurant, the Grub and Grog Shop is still a firm favourite among Leeds’ plant-based community. That’s because it offers up vegan and vegetarian-friendly breakfast, lunch and dinner in an informal setting, with everything made from scratch (as much as possible) using local, organic ingredients. Grub and Grog also works with a number of local providers, meaning customers can buy the products used directly from the shop."
"Rather than marking vegan dishes with a “V”, this restaurant marks meat dishes with an “M”, meaning that plant-based dishes are front and centre on the menu!. Enjoy comforting treats such as homemade crumpets, vegetable fritters or roasted squash, all washed down (as you may have guessed from the name) with a selection of specialty beers and ales."
"The Grub and Grog Shop is a great shout for brunch in Leeds. They’ve got an eclectic menu that means you can stick with the classics or go for something a little more adventurous. If you’re playing it safe, you can tuck into crumpets, bacon sarnies and eggs on sourdough, but the real fun lies in their more creative options."
"Victoria Gate has to be one of the most striking shopping centres in Leeds. There’s a sense of luxury which extends from the architecture to the brands you’ll find here – and the restaurants above. It’s anchored by the flagship four-floor John Lewis store, but you’ll also be able to dip into Anthropologie, The White Company, & Other Stories and more for designer clothes and quirky stuff for the home."
"Victoria Gate shopping centre, one of Leeds’ newest additions, is a fascinating building inspired by Leeds' Victorian heritage and its historic shopping arcades. From the outside, the latticed concrete design is noticeable from miles around. Inside, there’s zigzag patterned stonework, shiny glass and plenty of beautiful natural light."
"Victoria Gate is a modern take on a traditional shopping arcade and a go-to destination for designer shopping in Leeds. You’ll find a range of well-known brands on here. Visit Tommy Hilfiger for preppy mens and womenswear, pop into Peloton for premium sportswear or shop at Calvin Klein for designer underwear."
"Humpit Hummus was never really a place I’d thought of eating at until I was invited to review it last year. I’m so pleased that I did give it a chance though, as it’s one of the best vegan places in York!. The premise of Humpit is almost like a ridiculously healthy kebab; you choose from a selection of dishes including pitas and salad bowls and then add all the fresh ingredients alongside your hummus!"
"Head to Church Street to Humpit, the Hummus and Pita Bear where the menu is totally vegan!. Their menu has three items; salad bowls, hummus bowls and loaded pitas. You can choose your ingredients for the salad bowl, and the hummus bowls and loaded pitas come with chickpeas, pickles, olives, falafel and more."
"Editor's Note: There's no photo available at the time of writing. The Humpit began in 2014 with a dream to create real authentic hummus and to be able to enjoy it with a warm pita. Five years later, the Humpit has established itself in the York community."
"Okay, so it’s debatable whether a huge, novelty donut is an essential element of a picnic but when they’re this good (and this fun), why not?. Rainbow, cream-filled, seasonal, chocolatey, fruity, vegan and veggie, Doe has an array of homemade donuts to choose from right in the heart of the city. Prepare to queue at peak times, but it’s worth the wait."
